On May 21, 1950, the Monaco Grand Prix of Formula 1 was in full swing.
Driver Juan Manuel Fangio was speeding out of the chicane following the famous tunnel on the track, heading towards the blind Tabac corner.
Suddenly, he hit the brakes.
It wasn't a usual braking point on the circuit. There were still several hundred meters to go before reaching Tabac. Why would he do that?
Past the Tabac corner, a wave from the sea had invaded the track. This had caused a multiple-car collision, leaving several cars blocking the track at the exit of the corner.
But how did Fangio know there was danger behind the corner?
As he exited the chicane and headed towards Tabac, the driver realized that something wasn't right.
The grandstand had an unusual tone.
Fangio noticed that instead of seeing the audience head-on (their faces, which from a distance created a homogeneous image of light tones), he was seeing the audience from behind (the backs of their heads, forming a mass of darker tones).
The audience was looking at what was happening at the exit of the Tabac corner, not at the cars coming from the chicane towards that corner. It was a symptom that something had happened on the other side.
It turns out that the day before the race, Fangio had seen a photo of a similar accident that occurred in Monaco in 1936. When he saw that everyone in the grandstand was looking in an unusual direction, Juan Manuel connected the dots.
His intuitive gesture saved him from crashing at high speed into the cars at the exit of Tabac. He likely avoided a serious accident.
