Forge Your Path. Embrace Challenges. Fear Ignites the Fire
This week, a moment of reflection, a practical idea, and a quote that sparks contemplation. And 19.000 motorsport jobs.
Hey there!
Athletes endure. Artists refine.
This week, we are here to pump up your mental muscles with a blend of three ingredients: a moment of reflection, a practical idea, and a quote that sparks contemplation.
A concoction to fuel your journey toward mastery.
Reflection: You Are Your Boss At 26, a certain Mike hustled as a junior analyst at the legendary Salomon Brothers, the finance powerhouse of the 70s-80s.
Dealing with markets, he clocked in at 7 am every day. The second person in, right after Billy Salomon, the top dog. "When he needed a light or a sports chat," Mike recalled, "I was the lone ranger in the trading room, so Billy shot the breeze with me. At 26, I became buddies with the firm's managing partner."
By night, Mike owned the "last out" title. Often crossing paths with John Gutfreund, another heavyweight. "When John needed a late client call, I was there to lend a hand," Mike said. "Many evenings, he'd treat me to a downtown cab ride, on the house."
"Morning, build a bond with the number 1. Evening, cultivate a relationship with the number 2. Where were the other 26-year-olds? Gone. They weren't in the game."
Today, Mike swears by the combo of hard work and building tight bonds with those running the show. "I never got why others didn't follow suit."
Michael Bloomberg, maestro of the empire with his name and three-term mayor of New York, grasped early on that you don't have a job.
You're not working "for someone else." You and I are the CEOs of a venture called "My Career Inc." As entrepreneurs, we must grasp the value of hard work and crafting the right connections to sell our "product."
Today, we're in the era of the "silent resignation." Doing the bare minimum and clocking out mentally.
If financial markets taught me one thing, it's this: when a trend is pushed to extremes, it creates a massive opportunity for those daring to bet against it.
That's why there's never been a more lopsided professional opportunity than for young pros adopting an entrepreneurial mindset, working hard, and betting on their future with genuine long-term vision.
If you're flirting with the "silent resignation," know you're scoring an own goal. Henry Ford nailed it: "The man who uses his skill and imagination to see how much he can 'give' for a dollar, instead of how little he can 'get,' is bound to succeed."
You don't work for anyone. You work for your future self in 10 years. Don't let yourself down.
Practical Idea: Embrace Problem Addiction It's tempting to believe that good fortune befalls others without reason. Reality check: the world doesn't operate that way.
As Jim Rohn put it, "The greatest reward in becoming a millionaire is not the money you earn. It's the person you become to achieve it."
Swap "millionaire" for "good parent," "effective leader," or "reliable friend." Same deal. Excellence's reward is always excellence itself. Growth lies not in the destination but in the journey. In overcoming. In the battle.
My life transformed when I realized champions choose themselves. They crave more challenges, go beyond the call of duty, and are hooked on problem-solving: their company's, their clients', their communities'.
And once they crack those challenges, they seek grander ones, creating a virtuous loop: bigger problems mean more financial impact for all - the solution's recipient (e.g., your client) and you, its architect.
That's why, on average, an IBEX CEO out-earns a non-IBEX CEO. They tackle grander problems (with broader impact and greater financial sway) than the rest. Their moves pack more punch.
Most folks dodge problems. To go far, avoid the majority. Get hooked on problems. Your career will find its way.
Quote to Mull Over: Fear Fuels the Fire Every doer shares a common trait: the fear of not measuring up.
"I wasn't afraid of punishment. I feared losing favor. I feared this more than death, more than crime, more than anything in this world."
